These values are not defaults, but a set of recommendations presumably based
on some measurement of applications since they distinguish between different
languages. I know how to tune storage usage by LE and was not looking for
some magical solution as you put it but was interested in how the
recommendations compared to our own values that we have had implemented for
some time. But in this case the recommendation was in error which was the
reason for posting the question.

Performance tuning is not accomplished by adopting a set of defaults.
Moreover, the use of a single set of defaults for a class of applications
as
amorphous as "non-CICS COBOL" is a mug's game.

Tuning storage usage by the LE can be accomplished only by obtaining a
storage report for each application and setting the LE's stack and heap
sizes for that application using the results that this report yields.

As I have had occasion to note here before, those who seek magical
solutions
to their problems shouild consult a haruspex instead of querying this
list.
