Tim,

The current senior management direction within the BrightStor division is
that unless a new feature or function cannot be delivered as maintenance, it
should be delivered as maintenance. And until such a new feature or function
can be shown to require a new FMID, new releases will continue to be
delivered as a maintenance upgrade.

However, anytime you want to "re-install" the product from scratch you can.
All the CA-1 Service Packs and new releases can either be treated as a brand
new install or as an upgrade to an existing system, your choice. Some
clients like to upgrade, so they don't have to worry about their existing
exits (some clients are still using exits that haven't been re-assembled in
over a decade) and others like to perform a clean new install every couple
of years to insure that they can identify any modifications or user-exits
and they are still required. That is a decision that falls into the 6-of-one
or half-a-dozen of the other. I have heard both sides of the arguements and
agree with both. So its your choice.

As the OP on this topic, the explanation helps me understand the rationale
for it even if my personal preference is for a new FMID for a new release.

I'd be interested to know if new releases are planned to be delivered as
"maintenance" for the foreseeable future (if this can be disclosed)? What
would cause a new FMID - a complete rewrite or re-architecting of the
product?
