If XREF leads to a doubling of the EXCPs then you must not be blocking your
output.

If you really want to improve the that performance, block the output files
and avoid the EXCP doubling.

I have found that specifying size=(1024K,320K) on the linkage editor (ie binder) really makes it run blazingly fast. I think I cut 1/3rd the time off of a SMPe apply (accept) processing time a few years ago. It may have been more but a large apply took 2 hours less time . I have always updated the smpe defaults for the binder to include the large size(s).
