The rule of thumb has been a max of 3 logical processors per physical processor. After this, LPAR management overhead goes up very quickly. This has been proven by my actual experience. LPAR performance improved dramatically when the ratio of logical to physical processors was reduced to 3:1 or less. Since this is a uni-processor(? _ See Shane's post) and each LPAR must be assigned at least 1 logical processor, you currently have a 5:1 logical to physical. This is a not-good situation. BY the way, the last time I had a mixed MVS/VSE environment, the VSE system did not play very nicely when attempting to share physical devices. Since this was more than 25 years ago, this may have been fixed.
