Few years back I tailored one of the MXG routines maybe ANAL30DD to produce  
program calls and XREF or something. Just to see where the time was being 
spent.  One of the interesting things was number of IND$FILE calls.
 
With the more modern emulators there's a config option of IND$FILE
or FTP and IND$FILE is commonly the default. There's two modes of IND$FILE.  
Fast and slow, don't know if it's configurable or not, but the emulator folks  
said they looked at the extended attribute byte to determine which mode to 
use.  Guess with a new system might need to review VTAM buffers. ==>D

One thing you don't want to see is a high number of  expansions.
