We're still on an "old" release of z/OS and LE: v1r5. Scheduled to go
to 1.7 in 1Q07.

Already tried that. The application has a "bug" in that it ignores its
own shutdown command. Only way to stop it is to cancel the A/S, and
that prevents LE from issuing the reports.

I'll take a console dump and "go diving" for a while....

BTW, results of the "benchmarking" job: The run time INCREASED by two
minutes (nine minutes to complete vs. seven with all the defaults in
place).
