Hi Radoslaw,
In respect of:
"As I mentioned before, it is probably not a media error, because the
tape can be read using BLP. It is single-file tape, so I can read three
"BLP datasets": label, dataset, label."
I would no consider the ability to read a tape using BLP as proof that
the tape is necessarily OK. The fact that the entire tape has been read
simply means that the physical condition has not caused a problem it
does not indicate that all the intended data blocks are present. I
believe a previous poster alluded to this.
The object of having the block count in the EOF/EOV labels, as I
understand it, is to allow a comparison between the number of blocks
written (when the EOF/EOV is produced) and when the file is read.
The question is without the block count how would missing data be
detected?
When reading with BLP all the existing blocks may well be read, but are
they all that should be there? If the answer is NO, and how can we tell,
then the data set is logically corrupt.
I only meant the media is OK. The other proof is number of errors
recorded in RMM. 0 permanent, several temporary (which is normal AFAIK).
Obviously it is not good to have discrepancy between the label and real
block count - that's why I asked the question!
However I suspect it is error in logic. Maybe drive logic, maybe system,
maybe application. I simply believe it is not caused by media error.

On the issue of "Hint: no user labels at EOF, only header."
It has been a long time since I either had an association with User
labels or read the Tape Labels manual. The current Using Tapes manual
(SC26-7412) whilst no explicit, implies that as both User Header and
Trailer records are optional it is legitimate to have one set without
the other, but that's only my interpretation.
Maybe it is legitimate (I also understand that from manual), however I
suspect it can be bug of application-supplied routine.
