The SVC transient areas were 1 KiB. There was also an error recovery transient area, whose size I don't recall.

IIRC, it was also 1 KiB. In a very few cases, ERP's were also loaded into the SVC transient area(s).

It used to be that reentrant code could be self-modifying as long as
it did so only temporarily while the hardware was disabled for interrupts.

Or you used ENQ. Or you used some other serialization technique. I've
thought for decades that it is inadvisable to write such code.

10,000% agreement. It might be "cute", but think about the poor slob that has to maintain the code after you and I disappear into the sunset. Not to mention changing Operating System requirements, which we've all seen many times.
