We've had some "Ellis Island" discussions in this thread but I thought you
were by now a thoroughly naturalised citizen of the "land of the free ...".
That being so, you are obliged to spell words with the "-our" ending as
"-or". You didn't say which dictionary you used but I happen to have a
thoroughly American Webster's[1]. There such words are spelled with the
"-or" ending followed by "or chiefly Brit." and the word with the "-our"
ending.

Folk who follow my posts very carefully may note that I make a point nearly
always to include one such word to provoke delight when the dumb Microsoft
spelling checker flags them as invalid. Maybe I should get out more.
Incidentally, for complicated reasons, my Window software is the American
English flavour - there I did it again. <g>
