In the early days of SMS, the data class mainly provided defaults for things like RECFM/LRECL/BLKSIZE, VSAM attributes, space attributes, etc. Those were used at allocation time but never used again.

Since then various things have been added to the data class which are not stored in the dataset itself, so they can only be gotten by referencing the data class, such as DVC, so a change in the DC does retroactively affect existing datasets. I haven't surveyed the data class to see what else might apply
