The Sysplex Timer has been the bedrock technology for Parallel Sysplex since the 9037-001 Sysplex Timer was introduced in September 1990, and enhanced by 9037-002 Sysplex Timer introduced in November 1996. This technology served our needs well for more than a decade, but as systems became faster and timing synchronization requirements continued to become more exacting, a replacement technology was required, which IBM is providing in the new Server Time Protocol (STP).
Here's an IBM web site which includes pointers to additional documentation and reference material for STP: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/pso/stp.html IBM previewed STP in Announcement Letter 105-241 dated July 27, 2005 and announced the withdrawal from marketing of the 9037-002 Sysplex Timer effective December 31, 2006, in Announcement Letter 906-137 dated June 27, 2006. http://www-306.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/1/897/ENUS105-241/ENUS105-241.PDF http://www-306.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/7/897/ENUS906-137/ENUS906-137.PDF The final step in the product life cycle for the 9037-002 Sysplex Timer will be withdrawal of support. IBM withdrew support for 9037-001 Sysplex Timer in December 2003. IBM has not announced withdrawal of support for 9037-002 Sysplex Timer. As to the below text "The Sysplex Timer is Dead", those words are mine. I wrote that here on IBM-MAIN in a post titled "SHARE in Tampa Florida, February 11-16, 2007" dated Wed, 25 Oct 2006 17:19:09 -0500. I used that choice of words to try to catch reader's attention, and I guess it worked!
