I've become a fan of letting the assembler do as much of the tedium as
is feasible.  E.g., to center a line of text on the printout:

TEXT1   DC    C'THIS IS A LINE OF TEXT TO BE CENTERED'
...
LINEOUT DS    CL120
...
        MVC   LINEOUT+(L'LINEOUT-L'TEXT1)/2(L'TEXT1),TEXT1

and so on.

Might be "messy" to do that with a literal, though.
