With FDR?
well, yes. I may as well tell the story.
I worked for a chemical company in the 70s, and we were early users of
FDR. At that time there were only two programs
FDR for full-volume backup
FDRDSF for dataset backup
It actually was distributed as a punched card link edit deck
FDR always backed up every allocated track, including free space within
a dataset (no DATA=USED option), but FDRDSF would only backup used
tracks. I found that using FDRDSF for our backups, selecting all
datasets and the VTOC, saved 30% or so of our backup time. So we
changed the backups
What I never tested was a FDR full-volume restore from the FDRDSF tape.
When we got to our DR test, we found that FDR choked on the DSF backup.
So we packed up and came home to face the music. Luckily the music
wasn't too nasty (sort of like a Meat Loaf song) and we lived to restore
another day, from FDR backups.
Of course, none of these problems exist in the current versions of FDR -
we've come a long way baby,
