It is not the double tape marks which are the big issue. Cartridge
tapes (except 3480) write a special EOT mark after the last-written
file. In your case this would be immediately after the double TM.
Some products like DITTO, when they recognize that the tape is labeled,
will stop on the double TM, but even if you can finagle a way to make it
continue, it will get a permanent read error on the EOT mark.
HSM can recover data beyond the EOT because it uses high-speed
positioning to the right block, which may ignore the EOT.
Our tape utility FATAR can recover data past the EOT and write it to a
new tape (see www.innovationdp.com for more info). However, we don't
recommend it for HSM tapes because the block numbers will change and
HSM's attempt to position to the start of the file will be wrong. There
are ways around this and our FATAR support techs would be happy to work
with you on this.
