Have you looked at the "mt" command? Unfortunately, that is one that varies quite a bit depending on the UNIX system. A quick look showed a command: mt weof 1 to write a single EOF marker at the current position. Assuming that you're not talking about z/OS UNIX, which writes an EOF during the CLOSE of the DCB.
