Ben, It would appear on the surface that this would be an easy migration, easier then using native tapes. How much time do you have to complete the migration? One issue that could become a problem is thrashing of the backend tapes/drives causing increased VTS mount times. You should review TapeCopy from Opentech Systems, http://www.opentechsystems.com/tape-copy.php . The IBM BVIR (Bulk Volume Information Retrieval) can be integrated with TapeCopy so VTS volumes are selected based on there location on a backend tape thus preventing backend thrashing.
The Virtual Tape Advanced Recall product http://www.opentechsystems.com/vtar.php will also integrate with TapeCopy to pre-stage the VTS volumes into cache thus lowering the VTS mounts closer to zero. Using something like it to go from your old VTS to a new one should be even easier because you won't have to mount the old tapes by hand. We had to physically mount all of the old historical tapes since they were not yet in a VTS. We were limited by the number of added tape mounts per day which our operators would tolerate.
