The following command is currently running on my system without any parsing 
errors.
LIST DSN MCDS SELECT(VOLUME(H10197))
 
Getting back to John's problem the DSI parameter which is the default will give 
him the dataset info he is looking for.

Are the help panels wrong?  They indicate "DSNAME" is the abbreviation
for DATASETNAME, not "DSN".

You're missing the DSN parameter
