Depending on the sensitivity/value of the old data, a single overwrite
may not be sufficient.  While it will probably prevent the casual user
from retrieving the data, there are "archeological" tools available.
(Think Watergate where they stated the 18 minute gap had actually been
erased seven, if memory serves, times.)

Several products, including our tape utility FATS, allow you to erase
tapes.  On cartridges, it causes an overwrite with random data, all the
way to the physical end of the tape.  For 3480 carts, it probably takes
4-5 minutes per cart.
