Depending on the sensitivity/value of the old data, a single overwrite may not be sufficient. While it will probably prevent the casual user from retrieving the data, there are "archeological" tools available. (Think Watergate where they stated the 18 minute gap had actually been erased seven, if memory serves, times.)
