Subject: RMM to CA-1 or CA-1 to RMM
Well, it seems we have two directions we can go with our tape management
system. We have some systems that run CA-1 and some that run RMM. At
first we stated that we wanted to go to CA-1. This seems to be what the
majority of people use. My personnel opinion I like CA-1 much better, I
would like to get some opinions on what people think is the best way to
go. I know, (because I've been there), most system programmers will
choose RMM...
John,
RMM vs. CA-1 is "paper or plastic". They are so functionally equivalent
that you make your selection based on business, not technical factors.
Which is cheaper? Which is easier to support? Which is easier to use?
Which has better vendor support? I've done a lot of CA-1 to RMM
conversions, but if an RMM to CA-1 conversion came up for me, I wouldn't
hesitate to do it. If CA-1 works better for you technically and from a
business perspective, there's no reason not to choose it. If you have a
large SMS tape environment and use IBM robotic tape libraries, I would lean
toward RMM because it supports that environment a little better than CA-1.
Let me know offline if you have more specific questions.

Tom Conley
