Okay! I got it wrong.
I forgot it was increments of 9, rather than 8.

But, I did remember that it's non-disruptive until you want to jump to an S54.

I think I got that right. I only have an 890 and a 990.


IBM introduced the (poorly defined) concept of hardware and software CPUs with 
the z/990.
