Bob, In answer to your question about having 256M real storage, and not to take anything away from the very good answers you've already gotten, I offer this as a comparison.
I have two z/OS 1.7 systems with 256M real each. They are running no applications except GDPS. There are no monitors, no CICS, no databases. There is no batch work except the occasional sysprog utility. D A,L shows 22 STCs and 2 TSO users. We are a medium-size shop, device-wise. Right after an IPL I use roughly 10000 tracks of common storage on each system.
