And this is something I completely agree. The emotional contact ('close
to the heart') is a key. Plus some experience.
But not age itself. Some of the subscribers "grew up" from operator
position. They were (they still are!) curious, diligent, hard-working.
However not every operator became a sysprog. Some o them started as
operators and retired as operators. Some of them still work and talk to
(sometimes) much younger sysprogs.
I remember I was teaching operators, one of them had 17 years of
experience. My experience was approx. ...1,5 year. (I felt stage
fright). The course was IBM ES10 - TSO, ISPF, JCL. I experienced more
such examples.
