FWIW, I used DITTO, IEBGENER and IEHMOVE (UGH) to stack multiple
3480/3490 volumes onto a single VTS volume. Most of the JCL and
control statements were creating using a RYO CLIST. I also used the
TAPECOPY utility from the CBT site to good advantage. Our "Tape
Apes" hated me for all the mount requests but the transition was
accomplished in about 5 weeks, for 20,000 3480/3490 volumes. During
the process, I also "stacked" multiple archival volumes; we had a
LOT of carts with only one small dataset on each one.
Rick,
I can sympathize with you on this one. You are in a no win situation,
one option is to involve the operators and let them submit the jobs
(then they can hate themselves). With proper prep work and management
"push" this can be done even though it will have some amount of
moaning and groaning.
One thing I found that you can have a "race" between the shifts and
the most tapes done by a shift gets a dinner (pizza?) .
