One, Bill Joy isn't what I would call a large person. He is a pretty normal sized guy, or at least he was the last time I saw him in person a few years ago. And second, back in the day when VI was hatched there were no key pads. Keyboards yes. Pads no. Whether that was his intent or not I can't say. He is supposed to have banged the original out in an afternoon in frustration with the even worse crap that was available in BSD zero dot something. Unfortunately it escaped and survived in the wild like a feral cat. VI certainly is a crock of sh1t. But for better or worse it goes out with every *IX distribution so it is about the only thing the *IX admins can really count on. Pity them.
