From: "Schramm, Rob" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I would ask all of the listers to strongly indicate to their IBM reps that the lack of a strong developer population for z/OS will ultimately lead to it's demise. The ability to develop on the platform at a reasonable cost, keeps the platform viable.
I know a company that was in the process of moving off the mainframe and were already winding things down. Through a series of chance circumstances, they happened to install a low-cost mainframe product from a small ISV. The product solved several issues the company had been having, and since then they've stopped talking about moving off the mainframe. In fact, they're now investing in new hardware and software to bring their mainframe back up to standards.
The low-cost product was developed on a low-cost platform; i.e. FLEX. Without FLEX, the product would (a) not have existed and (b) not have been attractive or affordable to a company that was already planning to move off their mainframe.
