Who cares about cpu utilisation as far as there remain unused mips ? i am ok
with 30 % load it is just that i cannot get 300 mhz machines anymore !
Real world is a world where a lot of software needed by our clients do not
run on Linux , do not run on MVS , they just run on Windows ! and some run
only on NT4 , this is the real world .
( today we got a new request , one ( real estate product) runs only under
AIX or Sun , the other ( a web tool) runs only under W2K ,with a
proprietary data base so one will get a partition on a AIX P570 , the other
will get a 2k$ dual proc machine because we do not trust the software ! That
is life . real life ! 241 servers and climbing !

I do not know about this Oracle RAC , but i know about an Oracle Business
Suite ERP that is running under redhat using heavily a big quad processor
( intel )
and i asked if i could put that on my IFL , the answer from Oracle was
"we don't know" , the answer from big blue was , well of course , it is
difficult to say , we would have to do some benchmarking , some trials etc ..
because we are very good for I/os ... but if it is processor consuming it
can be tricky to determine .
Amen
Now what do i do ? keep my 20 000 euros machine ? or take a chance on my
brand new IFL ? or spend 10 days running benchmarks ( that's 20 k$ more)
Well i have a production to run , i intend to keep my job and i am a coward .
( ERP systems are used only by the top floor people here )
What i am saying , is that it is not that easy to do , it is not easy to decide
And i often have the impression to play guinea pig in this kind of business
but on the other hand this is why we are so well paid <big grin>
