John,

We've looked at it, and it certainly has advantages over the current
HMC "system console" support -- we'd be able to provide a console image that
would be byte-for-byte identical in look and behavior to what we support
through MCS and SMCS.

One thing you overlooked is that the z/VM support supports CMS -- so a
system programmer can use CMS to edit files through this interface.

It wouldn't be a huge stretch to (also) support TSO (and ISPF of course)
through the interface. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to edit that PARMLIB
member that prevented you from bringing up Comm Server and your SMCS
consoles when you don't have any local MCS consoles?

Seems like a nice way to provide the "console of last resort" and the "system
programmer access of last resort."

As silly as this sounds I don't recall that we've gotten a formal requirement
(say from SHARE) to support it.

As always, if you ask us to do something like this, we don't do something else,
so you've got to tell us whether its worth the effort. Its not particularly
cheap
to do, although its cheaper since we did the SMCS support.
