Just to add briefly to everything that has been said already, certain channel program orders may run for a long time, commit is one of them that will force the destage of tracks to disk. If you use the synchronous version, and it has not completed, MIH can get involved, so to prevent that from happening, you can use the asynchronous version by requesting a number from the storage controller. Then, using that number, you can interrogate the status of your request. Much like getting a number at the supermarket, then coming back and saying is order 57 ready. Before you can do that however, you must supply the CFW ID if it is active, therefore an additional step is required to get the CFW ID before you can request a number. That could be why some vendors request CFW be set off. My .02.

As far as I can see the CFW commands always apply to the whole subsystem,
and have never applied to a single volume.

My past experience is that subsystem means the whole Storage Controller. My
recent experience is with HDS only and this is how the command operates
still.

My mistake Ron. The CFW command does indeed apply to the whole subsystem
(also true for IBM ESS and DSx000).
