I have heard no complaint that the 44-character z/OS limit on data

is inconveniently large and should be decreased.
A long time ago (30+ years) I worked at a bank where the used a *LOT*
(read most) of dsns that were 43 or 44 characters in length. If you
understood the naming convention it did make sense *BUT* there were
quite a few JCL errors (DSN not found) just the same. The issue came
to a head when the asked me to scan SMF to find out how many. I told
them that all SMF told me was a JCL error not which type.
