I don't think that "other platforms" bother to do many sorts. Most of their data reside in databases such as MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle, DB/2, etc. If they need something sorted, they depend on the database system to do it. I think this just basically sorts the keys with a pointer to the actual data and not the entire "record".
