I think you are confusing concepts for processors with concepts for z/OS. You want to know the limitations for the SDM system so you want the z/OS perspective. z9 introduced Logical Channel Subsystems (LCSS) and support for multiple subchannel sets where set 0 can have base and alias devices while set 1 can only have alias devices. Each subchannel set can have approximately 64K devices and this is supported via "logical" 5-digit devices. Prior to MSS, z/OS supported 63K subchannels (64K - 1K reserved for system use). With MSS, set 0 can have 63.75K subchannels and set 1 can have 64K subchannels. There is a good explanation of this in SG24-7203 IBM System z9 109 Configuration Setup -- Regards, George Kozakos z/OS Level 2 Software Service ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html
