>And that poor design forced even worse design decisions on later developers

Paul, is there anything you like about z/OS?

UNIX has its warts too!

I remember when MicroSoft created the MS/Office bundle.
Macros that worked in the stand-alone releases of WORD & XL stopped working,
and Micky-Soft refused to do anything about it.
They re-wrote the macro language (VBA) and left you high and dry.

There was even an article in PC World (I think) that was entitled:
"You call that support"?

IBM promised, in 1964, that you wouldn't have to re-compile anything, unless it
depended on timings, or undocumented/non-standard API's (they didn't use API as
a term, then).

Even they weren't perfect.
Look at the changes to JES2 exits.

But, that direction means you're stuck with some then good, now questionable,
choices.

Live with it.
Come up with some (cost effective) decisions!
BUT, stop b*tching about it!
