My $0.02:
It's not your, but customer decision. They have money, they make the
rules. Even silly rules. If they want data on RedWood drive or reels
*and they pay for that* your role is to provide it.
Obviously from your point of view it is simply to expensive to support
all possible medias and formats.
The reasonable rich list would be:
- Internet
- CD/DVD (depends on code size)
- 3490E or 3480
I would get rid of obsolete HW and find some company which allow you to
create the tapes upon request. Of course I would tell customers that
tape media cost xxx$ extra fee, while CD/DVD and Internet is free of
(additional) charge. Note, xxx means more than 100$. The value which
cause manager to ask sysprog: "why can't you use CD?".
Another approach would be purchase of second hand tape drive(s) (btw:
are any new 3490 ? <vbg>) and simply get rid of regular maintenance.
The best solution depend on number of tapes you have to create, size of
code and installation method (SMP/E, other).
BTW: Isn't it funny how much time took IBM to start using their own 3592
format, even in limited scope ?
