I was looking at our dasd device definitions in HCD and noticed we have on
device with VIO turned on. We are running z/OS 1.7 and I'm using VIO
through SMS. Is it still required to define one device with VIO so SMS will
know what to emulate? If so, does the device have to be online on that
LPAR? Thanks for the help.

George, the device doesn't need to be online or available. By adding the
VIO=YES parameter, you are telling the system which type of device to
emulate for a UNIT=VIO request. This defines the geometry of the
emulated device, so the various access methods using it are "device
aware" and the I/O Supervisor routines responsible can make any
device-dependant decisions. It's way of saying the "VIO = 3390 geometry".
