Shane, Wintel solution? Who mentioned a Wintel solution?
The software runs on Mainframe. The virtualization of SATA is handled by a USP. How much more robust can the HW and SW be? I've seen some pretty crummy CPU usage from DFHSM in TMM environments. Part of that is because DFHSM and DSS do not use Compression Services. The other problem with TMM and DFHSM is that everything is double and sometimes tripled handled. I see many sites that migrate from the TMM pool to ML2 immediately, rather than deploying the TMM pool as a cache. Everything is double handled, and I've seen some terrible migrate/recall thrash in one site that was fixed by simply turning of interval migration. The other problem I see is that the TMM pools are still using the same old ML1 and ML2 rules that have been in place for centuries, again meaning file in TMM is moved to ML1 for a few days, and then to tape. If you were a TMM shop that wanted to replace Tape with SATA, then the first thing you do is stop migrating the files in the TMM pool! The TMM pool is allocated on Virtualised SATA disks and written there. That's it - all that double and triple handling by DFHSM goes away.
