I suspect you were using the latter when you saw "Previous in Topic" blacked out. I don't think the meanings should change, but they do. It's easy to demonstrate. Just view any message that has only one of "Previous in Topic" and "Next in Topic" available, and switch your sort, and the availability of Previous and Next will swap.
