And if I want to assemble (or COPY from SYSLIB), compile (or #include), Bind, execute, or serve as web page that file on the other platform, does WSA make
that seamless also? (To be fair, for some of these operations, even with
NFS, I perform a copy because I too often find things on the wrong side of
the ASCII<->EBCDIC bridge.)

WSA allows the mainframe side to reach over to the workstation side; e.g. to push a mainframe file down to the workstation, or send a workstation command to the workstation, or pull a file up from the workstation (etc). So, if you wanted to assemble, copy, bind (etc), you'd do that on the mainframe side and the WSA wouldn't be involved. Unless perhaps the source you wanted to assemble was stored on the workstation side, in which case you could use the WSA to transfer or edit the workstation file on the mainframe.

In other words, all communication with the workstation is being initiated from the mainframe side. Unless you count the GUI (whereby ISPF runs in 'GUI' mode on the workstation), but even then the GUI is simply an emulation of the mainframe side that happens to be running on the workstation side. So, you're still really doing all the driving from the mainframe side.

Note: some people seem to have the impression the ISPF GUI and the WSA are one and the same thing; i.e. that in order to use the features of the WSA, ISPF has to be run in GUI mode. This is unfortunate and untrue, because the ISPF GUI is one of the few things the WSA doesn't do very well. However, ISPF doesn't need to be run in GUI mode in order to enjoy all the other benefits the WSA has to offer. For example, I use the WSA just about every day for performing file transfers (etc), but I *never* run ISPF in GUI mode.

And if my workstation is running Linux or OS X?

I think someone said they've used the WSA on Linux. If the demand was there, I'm sure IBM could easily enhance the WSA to support other platforms.
