We upgraded to ZOS 1.7 this weekend and had an issue with

Compaktor on ML1 volumes? It seemed to have scrambled some HSM
VVDS entries....TIA.
Daniel, I am sorry you got bit by that problem. V5.4/50 of
COMPAKTOR is required for z/OS 1.7 and up because of changes in
UCBs and VSAM control blocks. Actualy V5.4/50 is the required
level of all FDR products for 1.7
You can see the chart of minimum levels and the current level of
each FDR product at

As far as COMPAKTing ML1 volumes, it depends on the free space on
the volumes. Lots of free space doesn't require COMPAKTion, but if
it is tight on space COMPAKTOR can help improve it. You can
specify parms to COMPAKTOR so that it will bypass volumes that are
not short of space.
Bruce,
The other reason to do it is (believe it or not) is that there is not
enough vtoc space. Yes I have run into that some time ago. (15+ years
ago).
