I don't have an answer for you. I inherited the code several generations of programmers after Don Ludlow moved on, and the module prolog offers no hint of any changes to explicitly add the capability of working with VSAM objects. I do know that we asked inside IBM for anyone who had exploited the capability within modern memory and couldn't find anyone at a time when some DASD changes were being considered. It doesn't appear to be the most valuable thing that SPZAP does - barring input from IBM-MAIN contributors or other customers to the contrary.
