Note that I said 3490 mode could be read on 3590 (this is how you
use the host utility to extract a virtual volume from an MVC).  I don't
know about the other way around, but depending on the microcode, it
could be possible.  In fact, I think I heard that it was from an engineer, but
to be sure you would need to talk to them.   

Maybe Paul Gilmartin knows someone in the hardware area that can answer
that question and he can post the answer on their behalf.
