It's a heresy since it concerns belief, what is orthodox and what is not orthodox and the thread was so titled because the word "believe" was used.

Interestingly enough, in an IBM document, "Program Directory for IBM Ported Tools for z/OS", GI10-0769-01, dated May 25, 2007,[1] referenced in a recent post with subject "PL/I will rule the world . . . not", has the following text:

<quote>

Defined to use z/OS UNIX System Services (z/OS UNIX) or OS/390 UNIX System Services (OS/390
UNIX)

</quote>

This would appear to define the "official" way that IBM documents refer to UNIX System Services when IBM folk put their minds to finding the correct abbreviation.

Nary a trace of USS you'll notice.

Congratulations to Mark Zelden since this was his - I thought rather tentative - answer to the question Phil Smith asked about what was the correct abbreviation. Because of a recent reference given by Mark, I now know why he got it right since he - as I used to - creates documentation of a more formal nature than IBM-MAIN posts.[2]

I notice that, even after a substantial delay in order to consider their position, none of the initial protagonists has managed to find an explanation to the paucity of USS on the UNIX System Services bookshelf. Thus I conclude they have accepted the logic of orthodox position!

Why use one word where several will do?

Using John Gilmore's "pen" when used as a prefix, are we "almost" there?

Incidentally, perhaps John has found an eighth type of ambiguity.

Moral of the story: Acronyms are VERY MUCH context-sensitive. If we can at least agree on that single point, then the so-called heresy pretty much ceases to exist, and it's only the obvious misuses that matter. And we can all pick them out, pretty much without a second thought.
