IMHO it is related to two "features":
1. Number of LPARs increased significantly on z/x90 and further on z9
2. Now HSA is "prepared" for upgrades. It is almost impossible to get failure during dynamic HCD ACTIVATE because of lack of space in HSA.
(my opinion based on my experience only).

If you've managed a 1 gig HSA on a z9 processor (your post didn't mention whch exact processor it was), I'd say you're doing great. But, beware - HSA can increase at the installation of new Driver levels or even MCLs, depending on what function is included in each, so if you choose to run so close to the limit, keep this in mind.

Maybe, but I never observed HSA size change caused by MCL. I could miss something, but I believe the changes were (*if* they were) insignificant.
BTW: IMHO it is impossible to have 1GB HSA on z9. At least 1.5-1.7GB.

When our z9 was installed, the topic of "HSA increase planning" was covered during the IBM Solutions Assurance process. It was covered in the checklist I was asked to fill out, and it was covered in detail in the "Must Read" document I was given.

As usually, here in Poland, IBM "specialists" do not even try to do System Assurance process, nor inform about any technical "gotcha". <g>

However I did some testings when new shining z9 was delivered some time ago. I defined "rich configuration" (>16 LPARs, a lot of devices, 4 CSSes, each at max. size). then I created "minimal config" (2 LPARs, 1 CSS, very few devices, CSS size cut to number of devices). Then compared HSA consumtion. The difference was approx. 20-30% AFAIK.
