Nothing as of right now and the authorities recovered the VA's laptop
and arrested the thief.
So, why did you expect any action from VA ?
Laptop was recovered, possibly no-one was interested in reading the
data. BTW: Assuming someone was interested, it is possible to get the
data without stealing the hardware.

It just bothers me that
with the encryption facilities available today on both mainframe and
distributed system that large entities like the VA and IBM (especially
IBM - they should know better) are allowing data to go outside of their
facilities in the hands of third party vendors unencrypted. Ok, enough
of my soapbox speech.
In fact, in my country, the only "interesting for public opinion"
incidents were related to loss of printouts. Data printed on paper.
Sometimes such printous are found somewhere, i.e. on landfill sites.
The major difference is no printout can be encrypted <vbg> and it is
readable by *anyone*. Absolutely no hardware, no technical knowledge, no
will to find out data format is needed. That's major difference.
