Samba is alternative to DF/SMB or NFS. HFT is rather alternative to ftp. Quite interesting one, especially in the old days before OSA-Express 'was born'. Some interesting features are:
- ability ot use ESCON as media (rather obsoleted by OSA-Ex)
- usage of Hitachi HMDE aka Rapid Exchange - sharing volumes between distributed systems and z/OS.


BTW: DF/SMB is free (included in z/OS price) and supported, while Samba is not.
