It would require his TSO session to allocate virtual memory in excess of 75 MB for Edit to load his file into memory. Although Dave indicated the problem was "record length", I suspect the issue may really be file size and insufficient virtual memory space rather than record size.

Our typical TSO user defaults to a REGION size insufficient for editing a file this large, precisely because there are few cases in our environment where users really need to edit files of this size. We don't want to "encourage" users to read an entire large file into memory with Edit when more often than not their requirement is just to look at a few records and is more efficiently satisfied by a browse of the file. Larger TSO REGION sizes are permitted on request, but seldom requested.
