stepname.RC Indicates that the relational-expression tests a return code
for a specific step
(stepname) of the job.
stepname.procstepname.RC Indicates that the relational-expression tests a
return code for a specific step (stepname) and procedure step
(procstepname) of the job.
on page 17-5 of z/OS MVS JCL Reference, SA22-7597-11.
Unambiguous reference to any <jobstepname>.<procstepname> value is supported
in IF-THEN-ELSE-ENDIF statements that test RC values.
Note also that Paul Gilmartin's anxiety about the initial, i.e.,
start-of-job, return-code (RC) value, while it has a basis in formal logic,
is gratuitous here.
