When I started, that was *the* way people got into system 
programming.  More specifically, those interested in system
programing picked operations as a starting point because it got 
them close to the computers. 

However, I don't recall that training was much more available then
than now.  Mentoring, yes.  And PLMs, fiche, etc. for self training.
I'm sure that varied from shop to shop, but I at that shop 8 years 
before sent to SHARE, and 2 or 3 more years before being sent to 
an actual class. Three classes in 14 years, as I rercall.

On the other hand, my next shop I was sent to 2 classes in less than 
2 years.  

In the last 18 years I've been sent to no classes, but lots of SHAREs.
