Because IBM put (some of) them there.

A friend of mine always wants a "reason" why I like to fly airplanes.  I
ask him why I need a reason.  He counters with "flying airplanes is
expensive."  I counter with "So is golf."  Etc., etc., ......

"Because it is there" should imply your ex. b); i.e., for some
activities, no specific reason is required.
