I've recently discovered VNC, which makes the session portable, at
surprisingly low (sometimes negative!) performance degradation despite
being an added protocol layer over VPN.

The subsystem you need may already exist in OMVS with POSIX pipes.
WJS long ago posted on the Tools & Toys Page an OMVS interface to
batch SDSF. I modified it to use two processes, one running batch
SDSF, the other driving the display. Still cumbersome, but valuable
when I have a long-running 3270 TSO command and want to bypass it to
look at TSO. I'm sure the original IBM copyright notice forbids my
distributing a derivative work.
IIRC John M. started this thread with a question of whether there's
a SHARE requirement to remove all restrictions on concurrent TSO
sessions. I don't know; does anyone else? THere ought to be.
