I agree.  In particular, there is a lot of hardware error checking, with 
resulting 
machine check interrupts if the hardware is unable to recover.  x86 offers 
nothing comparable.

I'm not sure what you mean about Amdahl.  AFAIK, there was never a problem 
getting a license from IBM to run on an Amdahl processor.

Aside from that, I agree with your analysis completely.
